The American System (a new name for federalism)

Once again those southern pigs... oh, excuse my language, the proud citizens of the southern United States have been complaining about our American System. I have no clue why they can't just accept that it is best for the nation. We are only protecting the American industries, including providing a ready and constant market for their cotton. Sure England may buy their plants for more but it is important for them to supply their portion of federal revenue, they are a part of the nation after all. We just graciously provide motives for them to better their already better half. But now we also have to worry about those crazy pioneers in the west, everyone hates the tariff except those with sense. As a nation we need income and apparently some people don't understand that a nation cannot be funded when two thirds of it disagree with the taxation. When they get riled up about it all, I think they realize not what they do to inhibit the expansion of the United States of America. They say that they do not benefit any from the building of roads and canals but they seem to not show enough foresight that we must build from the most concentrated areas first and then afterwards we may reach down to them and incorporate them into the network of ease. Roads only grow and when they grow they will eventually get to the south and hence better connect them to us northern states. Once that happens we would be more able to buy cotton and other plants from them, they would sell it all faster, make better profit even, everyone would benefit. As for the westerners; they too will benefit greatly from the building of roads and canals, they would be able to get supplies so much faster, that would cause less death, more profit, plus more free land for them! Unfortunately both sections refuse to have patience and wait for the benefits of it all.

E.Q.
A nation is a unified political entity. The American System tried to unify the nation mainly by economic means. Tariffs provided federal revenue and that revenue was used to pay off debt and to establish public roads and canals. The American System was a great theory but the lack of cooperation from the south and west made the whole thing go down the drain and this ended up dividing the nation because the south and west didn't like the tariff but the north loved it.

The bigoted northerner take on this issue is very entertaining while still informative. I also like the way you point out some things as if they are the only logical choice. It helps add to the atmosphere. The only problems I see are in grammar. Take a few minutes to read it out loud to yourself and see if you can find any problems.

The question is "What does it mean to be a nation." You kind of gave a definition of it and then went off back into your first topic. Look deeper!
